What an incredible weekend it was in Aston Park, Birmingham! Despite heavy rainfall, thousands of people gathered to celebrate Jamaica’s 61st independence day and its vibrant cultural contributions to the Midlands. The two-day Jamaica 0121 Festival was an absolute blast, featuring electrifying live music from both local talents and international stars.
Can you believe that it’s been 61 years since Jamaica gained independence from Britain? This event not only paid tribute to that historic moment but also honored the Windrush generation’s first arrival in the country 75 years ago. It’s truly heartwarming to see the community coming together to commemorate this significant milestone.
Â
Organizer Dean Alexander expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s very important for us. It marks a break from colonial rule, and after 61 years, we are still making our mark on the world stage. Coming together to celebrate our culture and sharing it with other communities is just fantastic!”
Kudos to Dean Alexander’s mother, Beverly Lindsay OBE, who partnered with Birmingham City Council to establish the festival in 2012, coinciding with the London Summer Olympics. This year, the event reached new heights under Mr. Alexander’s expert leadership, bringing Birmingham’s immense talent to the forefront.

The festival was an absolute treat for attendees, with a diverse range of stalls from local businesses and captivating performances from various artists. Aston Park came alive with the vibrant spirit of Jamaica, and the support from both the council and the community was truly overwhelming.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone involved in making this annual event such a roaring success. The Jamaica 0121 Festival has proven that Birmingham is a hub of talent and culture, and it’s time for the whole UK to embrace and celebrate this remarkable community spirit. Here’s to many more years of joyful festivities and cultural exchange!
